Reading and Writing and a Variety of Written Texts Were Common in Pre-Islamic Makkah

Fast spread of Islam especially in Roman, Yemeni and Persian scholars, who lived in the metropolitan centers, was not seen at that time as something completely unexpected. On the contrary Arab historians record that those people had been expecting some enlightened leadership emerging from Arabia especially Makkah. There is nothing else that could ever explain such fast acceptance of Islam in the areas like Rome i.e Syria, Egypt Iraq, and Persia and Yemen other than the fact that Makkah was already an established center of leading global literary activity.

Qur'anic text is replete with information that highlights pre-Islamic Makkah as the global origin and center of past civilizations that led humanity in literary activities.

Recent investigations are increasingly confirming the faithful transmission of Qur'an from its historical origins. This is in addition to the extensive research completed in 1979 on historical literature relating to transmission of the Qur'an entitled “The Collection of The Quran”, by John Burton of Cambridge University. John Burton concluded:   “What we have today in our hands is the Mushaf of Muhammad.” pp. 239-240] .  In other words, Burton concludes from the evidence that: the Quran is exactly as the Prophet left it. Just as we now see Tashkeel in it, so too was  it with Tashkeel during Prophet’s time. It means that reports of conflicting  nuqaat, tashkeel, Qiraat etc. is an invention of Muslim reporters interested in stretching the meanings of the Quran to help support their sectoral beliefs, deviating from the  widely used common  version of the Prophet’s written complete compilation in book form.

General Observations:

Qur'an Clearly & Repeatedly States & Explains Claims that Only the Arabic Language of Makkah & Mohammad in the World Could Satisfy the High Conditions Required for the Message & Messenger

It narrates the Arabians own internal history as best direct heritage of previous messengers, right from Noah. Thus it directly addresses them as the first addressees.
O Children of Israel, remember My blessing wherewith I blessed you, and that I have preferred you above all beings; (2:47)

Or are they jealous of the people for the bounty that God has given them? Yet We gave the people of Abraham the Book and the Wisdom, and We gave them a mighty kingdom. (4:54)

It similarly states that the Hijazi Makkan Arabic as the purest, undistrorted tongue and quotes verbatim in Arabic e.g what Prophet Suleiman (Solomon) wrote in his letter etc.

Verses al-Nahl 103, Ashshuaraa 198, Fussilat 44 uses the word أَعْجَمِيٌّ ,dumb/speechless/destitute of the faculty of speech, to describe all other languages including Aramaic, assuming it was a known literary language contemporary to the prophetic time. Thus, in the Qur’an other languages are viewed as simply not that cultivated and established in their ability/effectiveness, to carry and convey sophisticated discussions like that of the Qur’an. Arabs would have seen it as a fault, the idea and any incidence of borrowing any foreign literary elements. The Qur’an reminds us that its Arabic is the direct link to the previous messengers and scriptures and hence best for the objective: قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا غَيْرَ ذِي عِوَجٍ لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ ﴿الزمر ٢٨﴾ " It is an Arabic Qur'an free of all crookedness that they may guard against their evil end. (28)" The Qur'anic assertions that all previous scriptures have been distorted and no more pure original words of God found such an overwhelming acceptance that Rabbi Sa'adiah ben Yosef Gaon d 942CE openly prefers Qur'anic accounts over accounts he finds in his ancestral manuscripts. Professor Edwin Johnson d. 1901 shows in detail that by ~ 12th century there was no original Judaeo-Christian literature while these religious communities saw time to revive and assert themselves in the literary world which was completely overwhelmed by Muslim literature. He shows that all Judeo-Christian literature gradually appeared repeating Qur'anic and Muslim historians works with appropriations.

Collection of Specific Examples:

Sura Al Israa (Makkiia) verse 93, people of Makkah demanded a miracle from the prophet:

“we will not believe in your ascension until you bring down to us a book we may read."

Early Makki Sura  74 Al-Muddathir verse 52, describes the deniers of Makkah as people who are demanding illogical things as pre-conditions for seriously looking at the matters Quran has raised:

"Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. (52)" Sura  74 Al-Muddathir

It is well known that after the battle of Badr Muslims in Madina asked Makkan prisoners of war to teach their children read and write.

Surah Baqara verse 282 instructs every muslim to use writing for personal family matters:

Translation:

“O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a writer write [it] between you in justice. Let no writer refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation dictate. And let him fear Allah, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses - so that if one of the women errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and stronger as evidence and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you. And Allah is Knowing of all things. (282And if you are upon a journey, and you do not find a writer, then a pledge in hand. But if one of you trusts another, let him who is trusted deliver his trust, and let him fear God his Lord. And do not conceal the testimony; whoso conceals it, his heart is sinful; and God has knowledge of the things you do. (283
Alfurqan(Makkiia)  verse 5, Where Makkans say this Quran is like their old written heritage legendary tales

“They say, ' writen-up Fairy-tales of the ancients that he has got copied down, so that they are recited to him at the dawn and in the evening.' (5)”

Makkan were well versed in the knowledge of books like Taurat:
Sura Al-Anaam(Makkiia) verse 91, Quran asks them why are you amazed on Allah sending a book:

They measured not God with His true measure when they said, 'God has not sent down aught on any mortal.' Say: 'Who sent down the Book that Moses brought as a light and a guidance to men? You put it into parchments, revealing them, and hiding much; and you were taught that you knew not, you and your fathers.' Say: 'God.' Then leave them alone, playing their game of plunging. (91)

As-Saffat 37th Makkiia, verse 154-157, As Quran says frequently that appearance of Qur'an/Prophet  proved the truth of the previous revealed books so to challenge Qur'an asks Makkans:

What ails you then, how you judge? (154)What, and will you not remember? (155)Or have you a clear authority? (156)Bring your Book, if you speak truly! (157)

Quran frequently  asks Makkan people to look into your books once again and you will find support for the claims of Mohammad SAW:

And mention in the Book Moses; he was devoted, and he was a Messenger, a Prophet. (51) Maryam

And mention in the Book Ishmael; he was true to his promise, and he was a Messenger, a Prophet. (54) Maryam

And mention in the Book Idris; he was a true man, a Prophet. (56)We raised him up to a high place. (57)
Maryam

Arabs Came across daily with remnants of  the Great Pre-Islamic Lost Arabian Civilizations

How many a city We have destroyed in its evildoing, and now it is fallen down upon its turrets! How many a ruined well, a tall palace! (45)What, have they not journeyed in the land so that they have hearts to understand with or ears to hear with? It is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts within the breasts. (46)  Al-Hajj

Sura Alfajr 89th verse 7-8 mentions common knowledge of Makki Arabian of their top of the world civilised heritage that included advanced cities:

Translation:  (city)of Iram, known for their lofty columns, (7)the like of whom none (city) was ever created in the lands of the world? (8)

Writing and literacy, it seems originated in Arabia and the city from which prophet Ibrahim migrated to Makkh could have been the most advanced on globe with written literature.  We can see in the following verse of the quran Sura Baqara 127-129. Ibrahim is praying to Allah while he was raising the foundations of Baitullah  Haram and Kaaba and his prayer included his wish for his posterity to be learned in The Book.

And when Abraham, and Ishmael with him, raised up the foundations of the House: 'Our Lord, receive this from us; Thou art the All-hearing, the All-knowing; (127)and, our Lord, make us submissive to Thee, and of our seed a nation submissive to Thee; and show us our holy rites, and turn towards us; surely Thou turnest, and art All-compassionate; (128)and, our Lord, do Thou send among them a Messenger, one of them, who shall recite to them Thy signs, and teach them the Book and the Wisdom, and purify them; Thou art the All-mighty, the All-wise.' (129)

Similarly in Makkah in the Prophet's time there were written books or scrolls attributed to prophet Ibrahim in addition to those books or scrolls attributed to Moses.

Surely this is in the ancient scrolls, (18)the scrolls of Abraham and Moses. (19)  Sura Al-A'la

Sura Al-qalam 68, early Makki sura states writing of the Quran. It indicates the Quran writing activity in Makkah soon after the first revelation became well known:

Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2)  AlQalam 68

The verse shows that common people knew what is being written(Quran) and are being impressed of its highly logical and sensible full of wisdoms characteristics. It is enough to establish that you are neither a poet nor  crazy person but highly sensible and prophet from God.

Qur'anic text is clear at many places that many earliest Muslims of Makka and Madina came from Makki and Madani residents who were Nasara Tauhid( Hanifi). sura al-Maida #5 v
The interpretations that relate the verses with single incidents of meetings with some delegations of people coming from outside of Makkah, such as Habasha does not satisfy the text of the verse which expresses the frequent or habitual meetings

AlKahf Verse 19 states a story of some comrades during the tyranny of some Arab king and it includes mention of civilised prnting of currency notes or minting of  coins:

Now send one of you forth with this leaf of currency note (or coin) to the city,

“By around 1000 BC two families of ancient writings had developed in the Arabian Peninsula. The one in the north (the North Arabic family) was called Musnad al-Shamali and the one in southern Arabia (the South Arabic family) was called Musnad al-Janubi.
Musnad al-Shamali (North Arabic) spread out around the first millennium BC through northern Arabia, and from this developed the Lihyanite, Safaitic and Aramaic writing systems, which flourished in the north of Arabia around the middle of the first millennium BC. From Aramaic Nabataean script and from Nabataean, Arabic writing developed.”

The area bears evidence of other ancient civilisations.

Just 22 kilometres from Madain Saleh is Al-Ola, located on the ancient incense route. The city served as the capital of Lihyan, an ancient Arab kingdom.

It is home to archaeological remnants that date back thousands of years, including its citadel which is some 8000 years old.”

Quran does not endorse any idea that the Arabs at the time of the prophet or before it were any way less prosperous, influential in world than any other nation on the Globe.

Quran consistently details that prophets  were always were sent to top most dominant nations at their best times and Mohammad similarly came: e.g after stating several prophets before Mohammad SAW it says

We destroyed the generations before you when they did evil, and their Messengers came to them with the clear signs, but they would not believe; so We recompense the people of the sinners. (13)Then We appointed you viceroys in the earth after them, that We might behold how you would do. (14)  Sura Yunus

If God is really interested in guiding the world and is all-powerful than why will he not send his messengers to top nations most influential and capable for the job?

This is the period before Mohammad that west filled with Greco-Roman myths.

All Arabia Was Arabia Felix ( Latin: “Happy, Rich, or Flourishing, Arabia”)

See the Great rivers flowing past Makkah, and

In Qur'an Arabia was a rich agriculturally moist, rainy, with innumerable rivers, streams and lush green land as it is in ancient Arabian Maps. Quran frequently exhorts to its first addresses Arabians to look at rain, greenery,  food crops etc and be thankful to Allah. There is no mention of deserts even once, check it. The droughts could be rare as they become historical events. The desertification has started and grown fast many centuries after the prophetic time.

Makki Sura al-Muminun 23: verse 18 asks Arabs of Makkah to look at the availability of stored rainwater they use for themselves and their cattle from wells, ponds, lakes and springs

{ وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَسْكَنَّٰهُ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَٰدِرُونَ }

And We sent down water out of the heaven in measure that suffices them and We lodged it within the earth; and We are indeed able to take it away so that they die of thirst together with their livestock.

It can be seen in the above reference and almost all western literature that western scholars do not include Quran while building historiography of the Arabian history Why?

Is there anything more authentic that whole Arabia ever accepted in the sixt century as the truth than the Quran?

It is the West's intentional or unintentional persuit to create a false history of Arabia that fits their created false history of the world!

This history of Arabia, as part of world, dominant in the pre-Islamic period has been filled with Greco-Roman myths by Castilian church and kings.

Muslims after losing their characteristics and status became totally overwhelmed by western propaganda and could not face the lies though their heritage clearly has an alternate version of pre-Islamic history that will definitely win if historians become independent of their vested sponsors and adopt forensic methods in historiographical examinations.

Modern history being taught in the world is false propaganda of the influential global politico-religious masters to continue their global dominance they fear any forensic examination of their myths.

For instance a modern scholar wrote “Imrul qais etc. are PERFECT examples of the genius of orality - like Homer.”

What is the similarity between the two!

A real person and a  faked invented character that they say was mentioned in some rotten books claimed discovered thousands of years after his forged life. Where is the oratory of Homer?  False created history to kick out or enslave or supress Muslims of Europe and ethnic cleaning Greco-Roman myth was forged.

Anybody can see this by gaining some introductory knowlege of what the evidence is available about the two.

(Imru` al-Qais bin Hujr al-Kindi (Arabic: إمرؤ القيس ابن حجر الكندي / ALA-LC: Imrū’ al-Qays ibn Ḥujr al-Kindī) was an Arabian poet in the 6th century AD, and also the son of one of the last Kindite kings. He is sometimes considered the father of Arabic poetry. His qaseeda, or long poem, "Let us stop and weep" (Arabic: قفا نبك) is one of the seven Mu'allaqat, poems prized as the best examples of pre-Islamic Arabian verse. Imru' al-Qais was born in the Najd region of northern Arabia sometime in the early 6th century AD. His father was said to be Hujr bin al-Harith (حجر ابن الحارث / Ḥujr ibn al-Ḥārith), the Kindah monarchy's regent over the tribes of Asad and Ghatfan, and it is believed that Imru' al-Qais was born in the territory of Asad. His mother was said to be Fatimah bint Rabi'ah al-Taghlibi

“Scepticism has attained its culminating point with respect

to Homer, and the state of our Homeric knowledge may be

described as a free permission to believe any theory, provided

we throw overboard all written tradition, concerning the author [xi]

xiv The Iliad of Homer

or authors of the Iliad and Odyssey. What few authorities exist

on the subject, are summarily dismissed, although the arguments

appear to run in a circle. "This cannot be true, because it is not

true; and, that is not true, because it cannot be true." Such seems

to be the style, in which testimony upon testimony, statement

upon statement, is consigned to denial and oblivion.

It is, however, unfortunate that the professed biographies

of Homer are partly forgeries, partly freaks of ingenuity and

imagination, in which truth is the requisite most wanting.” page xiii

Some More References in the Quran about Pre-Islamic Advanced Civilizations:

There were ruins if earlier generation which remained after the calamities that hit them and whole populations vanished. However their dwellings, because these were so strong and extensive, were re-inhabited by surrounding populations in the later times.

And you dwelt in the dwelling-places of those who wronged themselves, and it became clear to you how We did with them, and how We struck similitudes for you. (45)They devised their devising, and their devising is known to God; though their devising were such( due to their great resources) as to remove mountains.' (46)Ibrahim Verse 45

And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not. (50)Then look how was the outcome of their plan - that We destroyed them and their people, all. (51)So those are their houses ( that you have seen) , desolate because of the wrong they had done. Indeed in that is a sign for people who know. (52)  An-Naml

Adressees of Prophet Mohammad SAW were not only well aware of organized civilised governmental systems but also their weaknesses and problems:

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]. (188) Al-Baqara

Notes:

Some more explanation of above mentioned verse 282 of Sura Baqara:

“O believers, when you contract a debt one upon another for a stated term, you write it down,”

This is how the verse starts and as    is plural clearly enjoins all believers, “O people who believe” as they are expected to write. The verse continues and then uses pronouns consistent with  the plural form تَدَايَنتُم . The first indication is that one the same parties act as كَاتِبٌ

As the word  Katib  uses Katib a normal general form of doer, not professional skilled or business hired worker.  Because he will be happy to earn money to find some work this is also because the phrase وَلَا يَأْبَ كَاتِبٌ أَن يَكْتُبَ become unsuitable for hired scribe.  So in case somebody is asked to write that person will be freely and readily available.

It can be seen that in such matters i.e. both contracting parties have conflict of interest involved so if they can not trust or like to include  witness etc somebody else could write while the party dictates.

So this verse that gives first instruction for the parties to write themselves can only mean that almost everybody was expected to write.

Katib is a normal general form of doer, not specific for   حِرْفَتُه الكِتابَةُ   like  الكُتَّابُ i.e who is involved  professional skilled or business hired worker there are other words

See some explanation of the verse:

Imam Tirmizi concludes the verse clearly says that he must write it with Ieraabs (diacritical marks and dots)

The surviving part of pre-islamic  Arabic still has may words relating to professional business activity relating to producing fine books and manuscripts. One of the words is this Raqsh. There are plenthra of derivatives from the same root of R Q Sh.  I gave a link of  early Arabic lexicons includind a very extensive one تاج العروس which  have entries of these derivatives. Interestingly the family of words predominantly conveys putting dots ( or Ieraab) over the text.

Raqsh is putting dots on (alphabet) letters and writing.

And الرَّقْشُ Alraqsh:

Professor Robert Hoyland poses a question that why the story of Persian empire ad its literary image is accepted with much less literary evidence than we have for it than the pre-islamic arabic petrographs and inscriptions. He also asks why Byzatium and Persian kings were so much interested in Hijazi Arab Poets that they payed them to be their court visitors and recite their pure Arabic poems. These Arab poets and other Arab cheiftens were received in these courts with much welcome and respect and indicate their wealthy and advanced civilised character. Also he points that why their are two line in an Nabatian inscription where Arabic is written, seemingly as some quote, in Nabatian language.
